Depression is quite common. It’s necessary to understand what depression is to be able to do anything about it. There are varying levels of depression. Sometimes people may feel sad a little and it goes away easily. Sometimes people can be depressed a lot, and it does not go off, but results in suicidal tendencies. These would represent both ends of a continuum. Where do you fall on the continuum? When contemplating this “continuum” thought, you can see unique people will need different treatment. Not all people will need assistance, as some can defeat it on their own, but any depression that continues for at least two weeks needs attention from a skilled practitioner.


Depression is frequently associated with low serotonin levels, but this does not, in my view, lead to a very explicit definition of melancholy. One warning: Don’t confuse being tired with being miserable. You can be tired without being miserable, but you typically don’t have melancholy without being tired. A deficiency of serotonin will cause you to exhausted. Too little melatonin will lead to sleep imbalances.


Also, low serotonin levels will cause low cortisol levels also, since some serotonin will convert to melatonin in the day to help induce sleep. Going back to my own definition, this produces an umbrella, which I think many people would reside under. It’s merely a matter of degree. A good deal of people are coping with depression and do not realize it. I’ve seen this a lot and it’s sad because people are not living up to their potential. Depression even in tiny quantities can damage one’s self-esteem and the capacity to do their best in life.

What are the causes? What can we do about it? First of all, depression that gets worse has to be viewed by a professional practitioner or doctor. Some people have discovered some drugs to be useful. But usually the medication are a short-term solution and people that are on them, need to deal with the deeper problems.
