Inflammation is a biological reaction of the body to protect itself from damaging internal and external stimulation and start recovery. It’s a component of the body’s immune system and protects us from infections, wounds and tissue damage. Inflammation can be acute in which it can begin quickly and become acute in a brief span of time.

For instance, acute inflammation may cause ailments and conditions such as sinusitis, a sore throat by a cold, severe bronchitis, etc.. Inflammation may be chronic in reaction to unwanted toxins in the body such as cigarette smoke or extra body fat. What causes chronic inflammation?

  • Stress: Stress causes activity in the brain which may result in physical pain which might result in an inflammatory reaction in the body. Hence, people experiencing stress may experience inflammation.
  • Poor diet: Some foods such as simple sugars, high fructose corn syrup, refined flours, trans-fat-rich foods, processed meat, fried foods, etc. can activate the inflammatory reaction in the body. So the consumption of these food items should be limited.
  • Unhealthy lifestyle: Consumption of alcohol, smoking, leading a sedentary lifestyle and being overweight creates a strain in the body that triggers an inflammatory reaction.
  • Pollution: Pollution causes damage to the cells that might lead to inflammation.

What to do?

How can you be protected from chronic inflammation?

  • Regular physical activity: The normal physical activity of 30 – 50 minutes can allow you to reduce weight and will also enable you to mobilize the joints. This will reduce the odds of developing chronic inflammation.
  • Having a well-balanced and nutritious diet: Do include all of the food groups in your daily diet. Have foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, magnesium, carotenoids, antioxidants and lycopene because these nutrients are anti inflammatory.
  • Relieve yourself of anxiety: Sleeping for at least 6-8 hours per day, trying and using stress relaxation methods, talking about the way you feel, etc can assist you in maintaining and lowering your stress. This reduces the odds of inflammation.
