The natural medicine of humor is a remarkably powerful resource that you already have; you have just forgotten how to use it to maximum effectiveness. You will quickly discover that, while not a panacea, the natural medicine of humor is a huge tonic for depression or anxiety and will also supercharge different treatments because it’s an remarkable adjunctive medicine too! Smiling produces measurable physical benefits you may experience immediately: your anxiety decreases, your resistance improves, your frustration and pain tolerances increase, and your creativity soars.

Fake a smile and you will soon feel well enough to put on a real one! This is very good news for your proactive stance on sustainable mental health. You have an awesome quantity of pre-emptive control over your mood – you can, literally, select more energy and pleasure. The key for the use of the Fun Commandment in improving your mental health is to begin practicing right now, so that grinning becomes an entrenched, habitual way of accessing the natural medicine of humor.

If you wait to smile before your emotional health has taken a turn for the worse, and depression or anxiety has cared for you, it won’t be as effective. Smiling leads us directly into the next Fun Commandment you’ll find instrumental in maintaining your mental health: Act and Interact. Humor’s natural medication works best when we’re sharing ourselves and this Commandment is going to teach you how you can capitalize on the control you have taken over your physiology and disposition by grinning. Acting and interacting is now easier for you to do since you are smiling more.

In a good mood

Not only is your mood enhanced, but your smile is also a pleasant invitation to other men and women. My suggestion is that you solidify the power of the Commandment by setting a reasonable goal about the amount of people you will interact with daily. These social interactions are amazing for your mental health, forcing you to exchange information and ideas with someone else. Combined with your commitment to grinning, your interactions should be agreeable, as your increased energy, diminished pain, and reduced stress levels are extremely attractive to others. Beyond keeping you from isolation, there’s another reason why behaving and interacting with the people you encounter fosters improved mental health. It permits you to prevent religious “flat tires.”

Spiritual flat tires occur when you sidestep, or avoid, an interaction that’s going to occur naturally – you duck into a workplace to avoid encountering someone in a hallway or you do not answer the phone because you don’t need to talk to the individual calling. This sort of avoidance drains and deletes your reservoir of strong natural energy and siphons your psychological health reserves. Maybe you have noticed that it usually takes you twice as much physical and mental energy to avoid doing work than you would have expended just doing it?

Additionally, it takes twice the energy to prevent behaving and interacting with the individuals who cross your path as you’re, in effect, saying,”I will fix the mistake that character made by putting this person in my path and I will correct it by being emotionally and emotionally negligent.” Mental and spiritual negligence have the identical effect as physical negligence (is not it odd how you get tired if you do not exercise?) . If your mental health is able to allow this much energy to be drained, then you’ve got a lot larger reservoir than I! We miss out on an interaction with a teacher. If nature did not have a lesson for you, that person you just avoided wouldn’t have been put in your path.

Keep in mind

You state that the person you just avoided was a negative impact or would have wasted your time? I know we have valid schedules to keep, but when I’m avoiding people based on my prejudgment of these, I’m cutting myself off from my best teachers – these very same men and women. All of us learn tolerance from the intolerant, patience from the impatient, temperance in the intemperate, gentleness in the ruffian, etc.. I’m supremely grateful for all those teachers and the lessons they provide me.

We produce a small, nagging spiritual emptiness of dishonesty, the sort of dishonesty that prevents us from laying down our heads with complete peace of mind every night. Our spiritual flat tire results from the pothole our avoidance generated; it’s a natural result, or symptom, of our spiritual dishonesty. These impacts clutter our lives with psychological and emotional baggage that further drains us of our power and vitality.

The third Fun Commandment that can help you utilize the natural medicine of humor to control your mental health is: Celebrate Everything. Celebrating everything may seem like a monumental task to somebody who’s mental health is not up to par, however you’ll discover this section of my physician’s orders a lot easier to fulfill as soon as you start practicing my first two Commandments.


In actuality, observing everything is more than a maintenance step supplying sustainable mental health. Additionally, it will become the way you live, the more you practice it, as you will appreciate the results so muchbetter. Your deadly seriousness (taking yourself too seriously) encourages the attitude that a mature adult shouldn’t let herself be so positive and so mental health is jeopardized. We could do more than chuckle at this birthday boy’s unabashed optimism – we ought to emulate it! When was the last time you encountered an unexpected pile of manure on your life? You had absolutely no control over the mess, right? But you had complete control over your response to it and this is the trick to using celebration to maintain your mental health improved! When you observe everything, the natural medicine of humor creates spiritual, emotional, and psychological health like nothing you’ve felt before. You’ll find that your fears become less controlling when you’re celebrating everything since it no longer matters so much how things turn out. In actuality, you’re literally ready for anything as you’re ready to obtain the blessing in whatever happens. My daughter-in-law, by way of instance, broke her back last year.

My son, who’s often my version for the embodiment of my Fun Commandments, can tick off a laundry list of blessings his family has obtained as a direct consequence of his wife’s”tragedy.” Not that his mental health has not been contested, but faced with the alternative of depression and anxiety over an event he could not restrain versus finding the blessings awaiting him, he’s chosen the latter. The option to celebrate everything isn’t a panacea; my son’s choice didn’t change the truth of his wife’s injury.

What did change, however, was his ability to answer the injury and, thus, keep his mental health on an even keel. Celebrating all changes our lives as it allows us to control the only things we have control over – our activities, thoughts, and attitudes. There you have it. Start by going the extra smile, use your newfound grinning energy and vitality to behave and interact with people, and observe everything to keep your positive momentum.
